Alex Kingston is to make a guest appearance in the fourth series of Doctor Who.

The former ER actress will play an enigmatic character called River Song in a two-parter written by Steven Moffat.

Colin Salmon - who played Charles Robinson in three James Bond films - has also signed to star in the episodes, which see The Doctor attempting to discover the truth about an abandoned library.

Kingston said she was delighted to appear in the show, adding: "I used to watch Doctor Who through the crack in the door. I was so terrified but I couldn't tear myself away. I loved it so much and I'm so delighted to be a part of the new series."

Other guest stars confirmed for the series include Sarah Lancashire, Felicity Kendal, Lesley Sharp, Georgia Moffett, Lindsey Coulson, Fenella Woolgar, Tim McInnerny, Peter Capaldi, Phil Davis and Tracey Childs.

The series is currently filming and will be aired in the spring.

Catherine Tate Confirms Exit...

Doctor Who star Catherine Tate has confirmed she will leave the show at the end of the next season - and believes David Tennant might be joining her soon after.

BBC News reports that Tate, who will be reprising her role as companion Donna Noble in the fourth season, told Jonathan Ross on his Radio 2 show that she will not be staying on. She also suggested: "I think it's maybe David's last series."

However, Tate said that Tennant will "possibly" play The Doctor in the three specials commissioned for 2009 by the BBC. The lack of no new season that year is believed to have been caused by Tennant's theatrical commitments next year, which will greatly hinder his availability for filming.

The future of Doctor Who is assured until 2010, following a BBC announcement in September that the time-travelling drama will return for a full fifth season.

Piers Wenger is to take over from Julie Gardner as the new executive producer of Doctor Who, it has been confirmed.

Wenger, producer of ITV's Bafta-award winning drama Housewife, 49, will also become the new head of BBC Wales drama from January 2009. He will join the BBC in the new year, working closely with Gardner in a 12-month handover period.

Russell T Davies, co-executive producer of Who, is on board for three specials airing in 2009 but has refused to confirm whether he will be involved with the fifth series, due for broadcast in 2010. Gardner is expected to remain at the BBC.

"I'm incredibly excited to be joining BBC Wales," said Wenger. "The success of the drama team there has been extraordinary and I look forward to taking the team to even greater heights."

Gardner added: "I know that when I hand over my sonic screwdriver to Piers for season five of Doctor Who, it will be to someone who loves and understands the show."

The forthcoming Doctor Who Christmas special will last for 71 minutes, according to the BBC, over ten minutes longer than the previous festive episodes.

The broadcaster also revealed that the special, entitled 'Voyage Of The Damned', will be screened at 6.50pm on Christmas Day on BBC One. The competition on ITV in the battle for ratings will be popular soap Emmerdale.

In addition, an hour-long installment of Doctor Who Confidential will be screened afterwards on BBC Three at 8.30pm.

'Voyage Of The Damned' features pop singer Kylie Minogue returning to her acting roots on board the Titanic, alongside David Tennant as The Doctor.

Billie Piper Returns...

Billie Piper will be reprising her role as companion Rose Tyler in the upcoming season of Doctor Who.

According to a report in the Daily Mirror, today confirmed by the BBC, Piper will appear in at least three episodes towards the conclusion of the fourth season, which is currently being filmed in Cardiff. The 25-year-old actress will star alongside Catherine Tate's Donna Noble, and the returning Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones.

Since leaving the hit time-travelling show in 2006, following two hugely successful seasons and numerous awards, Piper has starred in ITV2's Secret Diary Of A Call Girl and as Philip Pullman's heroine Sally Lockhart in a BBC adaptation of The Ruby In The Smoke.

Peter Davison has revealed that current Doctor Who star David Tennant was nervous around him when filming a special short story for the upcoming Children In Need.

Davison, who played the role of the Fifth Doctor between 1981 and 1984, told Radio Times: "David Tennant and I very much got on and did the scene. I only found out afterwards that he was a fan of my Doctor, because he sent me a very nice text saying that he was at first a bit tongue-tied. I wasn't aware of that at all!"

The scene, entitled 'Time Crash' and reportedly lasting seven minutes, was "enormous fun" to make, according to Davison. He added that he felt his cricket-inspired costume was initially "a little out of place" in the new Tardis set, but he "grew into it again after and hour or so".

The Children In Need episode is schedule to air on Friday, November 16 on BBC One.

Villians Revealed...

A group of Doctor Who's enemies - the Sontarans - will be revived, 35 years after first appearing in the BBC drama.

The warriors will feature in an episode which will also mark the return of Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones.

She will run into the Doctor's new companion - Donna Noble, played by Catherine Tate - for the first time.

Another plot for the new series will be a meeting between the Doctor and Agatha Christie, and guest stars will include Felicity Kendal and Sarah Lancashire.

There will also be appearances from Tim McInnerny, who played Percy in the first two series of Blackadder and Captain Darling in the fourth.

Peter Capaldi - a fierce spin doctor in political satire The Thick of It - and Phil Davis, who appeared in Quadrophenia and Bleak House, will also be seen on the show, the BBC has confirmed.

The series, once again starring David Tennant as the Doctor, is due to be seen in the UK next spring. Filming is under way in Cardiff.

The run will begin with Donna tracking down the Doctor during an alien emergency in modern-day London.

Martha will be back halfway through the series, once actress Agyeman has appeared in three episodes of Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood.

"Martha Jones returns in a fantastic storyline and the fans will get to see her in a whole new light," Agyeman promised.

The Sontarans were first seen on The Time Warrior, an episode of the show in 1973, when Jon Pertwee was in the lead role.

Christopher Ryan, known as Mike in 1980s TV sitcom The Young Ones, will play the head Sontaran.

And the tentacle-faced Ood will return in an episode called Planet of the Ood.

The ex-Coronation Street actress will play Miss Foster, described as an "enigmatic and powerful businesswoman".

She told the Press Association: "I'm absolutely thrilled to be in Doctor Who. It's a brilliant episode and I'm looking forward to taking the Time Lord on."

Lancashire will feature in the first episode of the new series alongside David Tennant and new companion Catherine Tate.

Monster role for Young Ones star (Series Four spoiler!)

Christopher Ryan, best known for playing super-cool Mike in the classic comedy series The Young Ones, is set for a guest-starring role in an upcoming Series Four adventure.

Ryan will play a Sontaran leader in the story, due to begin filming in the next few weeks.

"I'm absolutely delighted to be appearing in this new Doctor Who," Chris revealed. "The last time I appeared in Doctor Who was in 1986, Colin Baker was the Doctor and I was still a Young One."

The story in question was the Trial Of A Time Lord, where Chris starred as the slug-like Mentor Kiv alongside Trevor Laird, who played Martha's dad in 2007.

If you know your Who lore, the Sontarans will need no introduction. If you're a newer viewer, however, you may not know that the Sontarans are amongst the greatest villains from the classic series of Doctor Who.

A military, warlike species, able to clone vast armies of themselves, the Sontarans are locked into an eternal struggle with their enemies the Rutans.

Billie Piper is on the verge of agreeing a deal with the BBC to reprise the role of Rose Tyler next year.

The News of the World claims that the former companion would return for a three episode arc for the season finale, should Piper accept the offer - reported to be £20,000.

The paper quotes a BBC insider as saying: "We are all very excited that Billie is on course to come back. We're very close to getting her to sign."

Piper left Doctor Who at the end of the second season in the episode 'Doomsday', which saw her character Rose Tyler confined to a parallel Earth with her family and boyfriend Mickey.

Star Trek actor Patrick Stewart has revealed that he would love to appear in Doctor Who.

The 67-year-old said he is a fan of the hit sci-fi show and is disappointed that he has never been invited to make a cameo.

He said: "I have been a fan actually, yes, and deeply dismayed that I was never asked to be in it! I think it's a terrific series."

The actor will star with current Doctor David Tennant in a Royal Shakespeare Company production of Hamlet next year.

Overseas filming for ambitious episode (Spoilers!)

The Doctor and his new companion Donna are set to travel back in time to the Roman Empire for the fourth series of Doctor Who.

In one of the most ambitious episodes to date, The Doctor, played by David Tennant and Donna (Catherine Tate) arrive in Pompeii in AD 79, on the eve of the historic eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

The Time Lord and his companion are posed with an immediate dilemma; should they warn the residents of Pompeii of the forthcoming catastrophe or leave them to fend for themselves?

"Arriving in Pompeii marks the start of another exciting adventure for the Doctor and Donna," said Doctor Who's Executive Producer and Head Writer, Russell T Davies. "Donna is stunned to find herself in the midst of history's most famous volcanic eruption. Viewers can expect many more ambitious storylines and a whole host of guest stars in 2008."

The Thick of It actor Peter Capaldi guest stars as Caecillius. He's joined by Quadrophenia and Rose and Maloney actor Phil Davis as Lucius. Further guest stars include Howards Way and Born and Bred Actress Tracey Childs, who plays Metella.

The filming of the episode took place at Cinecitta studios in Rome, which the Doctor Who team expertly transformed into Pompeii for a week of filming in September of this year.

The Five Doctors...

Ah! The good old days. Unlikely they will happen again. The Doctor may live through his thirteen regenerations but the actors who played him unfortunately won't and indeed, are ageing sufficiently not to resemble the times when they played the renegade Time Lord. Whether or not the successors to show-runner/writer Russell T. Davies will ponder on bringing together the more recent regenerations only the decades will know for sure. As they haven't been written yet, we must look to this DVD of the 'The Five Doctors' from 1983, nearly a quarter of a century ago, to see how it was played out in its only 90 minute length episode.

In some ways, there are parallels to 'The Three Doctors' storyline in that only two Doctors were active and the third advised occasionally from the sidelines. Here, though, Tom Baker wasn't happy about returning and opted out, so footage of the uncompleted story 'Shada' was incorporated and he was stuck in a time warp leaving it to the other four regenerations plus assorted companions and cameos, not to mention enemies such as the Daleks (only one actually), a platoon of Cybermen and one ferocious Yeti to make appearances. This was supposed to be an anniversary story celebrating 20 years of 'Doctor Who' and oddly enough scriptwriter Terrance Dicks actually made a decent story of it.

An unknown hand was seen transporting various regenerations of the Doctor and companions to Gallifrey into the Death Zone where stands the Tower of Rassilon. In ancient times, the Time Lords used to bring members of various races here to try out various scenarios on a booby-trapped stretch of land. About the only race they kept out of this was the Cybermen who refused to play out the enactments without killing anyone. Actually, I would have thought the same might have applied to the Daleks but we can forgive the oversight. In many respects, this scenario actually looks like something that another species, aided by the War Chief, was used in a much earlier tale, 'The War Games', still to be re-released on DVD.

The objective is to use the Doctors to break into the tower. The chief Time Lords are unable to help, having two of their number lost in the attempt, locate and send the Master in with a promise of a further series of regenerations should he succeed. It goes without saying that the Doctors don't trust him although the fifth regeneration does return to the High Council chambers to see just what is going on. Treachery abounds, showing that even Time Lords have their own objectives in life with Rassilon leaving a surprise of his own for those seeking immortality.

I remember watching this story the first time around. If anything, I missed the original ending where each Doctor dematerialised their TARDIS from the original rather than the DVD adjusted modification which had the timescooped back to where they came from. I always thought that was rather nifty and it's a shame that the original wasn't left in there as an optional extra. If anything, that is something that is sorely missing from this release. No extras other than different versions of the music. With such a significant, in terms of the large guest cast, number of people involved, I would have been surprised that none would have volunteered to have given an audio commentary.

Having said that, 'The Five Doctors' should be seen as a reunion story. Although I doubt if it would have meant much to today's youngsters who were probably not even born when it was first released, for us oldies it's a chance to see characters that we were brought up with doing their thing. For that reason alone, it should be part of your 'Doctor Who' collection.

Paul McGann wants to return?...

Former Doctor Who star Paul McGann would happily portray the eighth incarnation on the Time Lord on television again if he is asked.

Speaking to SyFy Portal, the 47-year-old actor admitted that the BBC hasn't contacted him, dispelling recent suggestions that he may return for a multi-Doctor story. "Well, they haven’t called me, but often you hear it first through rumour. But you know… I’d go back and do it… as long as I don’t have to wear a wig."

McGann took on the role of The Doctor for the 1996 television movie, with plans for a full series to follow in a joint production between the BBC and the Fox network. However, despite impressive UK ratings, the venture failed to attract a significant American audience and more installments were not commissioned. McGann has since played the iconic Time Lord in a number of radio plays.

David Bowie to join cast?...

David Bowie is reportedly being lined up to star in a two-part special of Doctor Who as an evil alien.

The singer will allegedly abduct crime writer Agatha Christie for the episode and will clash with David Tennant's character.

TV producers hand picked the star because of his 'other-worldy' looks and are hoping to show the episodes on BBC1 next year.

However, a spokesperson for Bowie denies that there is any truth in the rumours. But insiders have revealed that he would consider a role, provided that he wouldn't have to spend hours in the make-up room.

Veteran actor Bernard Cribbins will make a guest appearance in the fourth season of Doctor Who.

"This is the icing on the cake, a wonderful addition to an already phenomenal cast," producer Phil Collinson told Doctor Who Magazine. "It's a wonderful cameo, which kept the entire cast and crew entertained."

Best known for narrating The Wombles, 78-year-old Cribbins is already known to fans of Doctor Who through his appearance as a bumbling policeman in the 1966 film Daleks: Invasion Earth 2150 AD.

David Tennant staying long...

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has confirmed that David Tennant will portray the iconic Time Lord for the entire duration of the next season, contrary to tabloid reports.

"He's doing the whole series," stated Davies in an interview with Doctor Who Magazine. "It was never even discussed that he might leave after six episodes. That's completely invented by the papers."

However, the hit drama's boss admitted that the longer term future is unclear. "None of us knows exactly what will happen after series four," Davies admitted, "[but] there's already talk of a 2008 Christmas Special."

Fire hits set in Italy...

Filming for the fourth series of Doctor Who has been disrupted, after a fire spread through a film set that producers had planned to use.

Writers have plotted an Ancient Rome-themed episode for the new series, and the show's team recently flew out to the Cinecitta studios in Italy, which had previously been used to recreate the ancient city for hit BBC Two show Rome.

However, expensive BBC equipment was destroyed when a fire hit the set on Thursday night. Fortunately, most of the crucial parts have been left untouched, and producers are still hoping to go ahead with their plans once the damage has been cleared up.

An insider told The Sun: "It was a huge blaze. At one point, it looked like the whole studio was a goner. It threw a real spanner in the works for the Doctor Who team. They're planning an episode where the Doctor goes back in time to Ancient Rome and thought it would be perfect to use the set. Filming on Rome has finished so it wasn't being used."

British comedy stars Felicity Kendal and Tim McInnery will feature in upcoming episodes of the hit sci-fi series, the BBC announced.

Kendal joins her former 'The Good Life' co-star Richard Briers amongst the stars scheduled to appear in episodes of the fourth season. It was revealed that Kendal will play Lady Clemency Eddison in a story featuring The Doctor's encounter with novelist Agatha Christie.

McInnery, best known for his portrayals of eccentric characters such as Captain Kevin Darling and Lord Percy Percy throughout four seasons of Blackadder, will also star in an episode later in the series.

Previously, Clive Swift from Keeping Up Appearances and Geoffrey Palmer from have filmed roles for the Christmas Special.

James Nesbitt rumour debunked...

Doctor Who writer Steven Moffat has denied claims that James Nesbitt is joining the show.

Earlier this month, a newspaper report claimed that the Cold Feet actor would take over as The Doctor when David Tennant decides to quit the role. However, Moffat has insisted that the story was completely untrue.

"The James Nesbitt story is a total fabrication. A fantasy. Just a guy sitting at a desk and inventing stuff," Moffat told The Mirror. "I wasn't going to say anything but I'm getting embarrassed for the wonderful Jimmy Nesbitt. So tell everyone please, it's getting very silly."

The Doctor and Donna book a date with Agatha Christie.

Filming is underway for Series Four of Doctor Who, with Catherine Tate reprising her role as Donna, the runaway bride featured in last year's Christmas Special.

The start of the new series will see Donna tracking down the Time Lord during an alien emergency in modern-day London. The couple are destined to experience a series of wonderful adventures throughout the new series including meeting one of Doctor Who's most popular aliens, The Ood in a brand new episode, Planet of The Ood.

Catherine Tate said: "I am delighted to be returning to Doctor Who. I had a blast last Christmas and look forward to travelling again through time and space with that nice man from Gallifrey."

Donna and The Doctor will also be travelling through time for an encounter with the legendary murder mystery novelist, Agatha Christie, played by Jekyll star Fenella Woolgar. Fenella will be joined by The Good Life actress Felicity Kendal, who will star as Lady Clemency Eddison.

"What a brilliant idea that Agatha Christie and Doctor Who should meet!," noted Matthew Prichard, Agatha Christie's grandson. "Two characters whose contribution to British entertainment is absolutely unrivalled. As far as I know my grandmother, Agatha Christie, never saw Doctor Who, but I am sure she would have been intrigued, excited and above all flattered by all this attention in 2007."

He dropped in on filming for a Christmas special in Cardiff in a break from appearing at a theatre nearby.

Baker said he was impressed by current Doctor David Tennant - and Kylie Minogue who also will appear in the episode.

"The atmosphere was as special as I remembered it," he explained. "I had a moment of envy seeing David surrounded by bizarre aliens.

Sir Ben Kingsley to play Dalek Creater?...

Sir Ben Kingsley is reportedly close to signing up to playing classic Doctor Who villain Davros - creator of the Daleks - in the next season of the cult show.

An insider told The Sun: "Ben’s agent has been in talks for a while now and he’s very keen to play the part of Davros. A deal will be signed any day now."

Kingsley, best known for his Oscar-winning portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi in the 1982 film, is no stranger to playing ruthless villains as he portrayed The Hood in the recent Thunderbirds film. He was also Oscar nominated for his portrayal of the malevolent gangster Don Logan in the 2000 film Sexy Beast.

The character of Davros was first introduced in the 1975 story 'Genesis of the Daleks' as the evil Kaled geneticist who masterminded the creation of the Daleks in a bid to exterminate the rival Thal race on Skaro. He was last seen in the 1988 story 'Remembrance of the Daleks', where he managed to flee from the Dalek mothership in an escape pod moments before it was destroyed.

They're back - but will they be Beastly?

The Ood, one of Doctor Who's most popular aliens, will return for a brand new adventure in Series Four.

In Planet of the Ood, the Doctor and his new companion Donna will travel to a weird and wonderful alien planet, where she will meet the mysterious race for the first time.

The episode will allow viewers to discover the origins of The Ood and why they behave the way they do – but will the Doctor become their friend or foe?

"We're delighted The Ood are making a welcome return to Doctor Who," said lead writer and Executive Producer Russell T Davies.

"They were last seen falling into a black hole back in Series Two and we think it's only fair for the viewers to find out what the Ood have to say for themselves! Donna is certainly in for a shock."

The fourth series of Doctor Who goes into production this July and will hit UK screens in Spring 2008.

Tony Blair to be Cameo?...

Recently departed Prime Minister Tony Blair is reportedly being considered for an appearance on Doctor Who.

A report in The Daily Express cited an insider on the hit show as stating: "Everyone knows Blair did The Simpsons and has appeared with Catherine Tate, who is the new companion for The Doctor. So we're sure he'd be more than open to the offer of a cameo on the show."

If Blair was to appear on Doctor Who he would be following in the footsteps of prominent politician Ann Widdecombe, who appeared in 'The Last of the Time Lords' recently. In the episode, the season three finale, she appeared as herself voicing support for the fictional character of Harold Saxon, a political figure concocted by The Doctor's arch nemesis The Master.

Christmas foe revealed...

An alien monster due to feature in the Doctor Who Christmas Special has been spotted during a break in filming.

The monster, reportedly played by a dwarf, has a bright red face covered in small black spikes and will appear aboard the Titanic alongside David Tennant and Kylie Minogue in 'The Voyage Of The Damned'.

“The actor playing the alien spends hours in make-up to get that look,” a crew member told icWales, adding: "Kylie is a pleasure to work with - she’s incredibly lovely in the flesh."

The special hour-long episode is due to be screened on Christmas Day on BBC One.

It was previously reported that dance-pop singer and actress Kylie Minogue would be appearing in the fourth season of Doctor Who. Minogue has been given a lead role in the show’s upcoming Christmas special.

Last Wednesday, the BBC announced that another celebrity is set to appear in the forthcoming episodes of the revived comedy series. Comedienne Catherine Tate, who played the runaway bride in last season’s Christmas special, will reprise her role on the show on a regular basis. Tate’s re-casting means that the tenth Doctor (David Tennant) will have two companions in the fourth season, one being Tate's Donna and the other being Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman).

"I am delighted to be returning to Doctor Who,” Catherine Tate said. “I had a blast last Christmas and look forward to traveling again through time and space with that nice man from Gallifrey.”

The 39-year-old comedienne and actress is most known for her sketch comedy series, The Catherine Tate Show. In it, she portrays a wide array of characters, including apathetic adolescent Lauren Cooper and cockney grandmother Joannie “Nan” Taylor. Her work on the show has earned her several recognitions, such as a 2004 British Comedy Award for Best Comedy Newcomer and a 2006 British Comedy Award for Best Comedy Actress.

In last year’s Christmas special of Doctor Who, "The Runaway Bride," Catherine Tate's character, Donna, mysteriously vanished as she prepared to marry her boyfriend in a ceremony on Christmas Eve. Donna later reappeared in the TARDIS, the Doctor’s time machine and spacecraft. On the way to the church, it was revealed that Donna was the key to a primeval alien plan to annihilate the planet.

"Catherine was an absolute star in 'The Runaway Bride,'” executive producer Russell T. Davies said. "We are delighted that one of Britain's greatest talents has agreed to join us for the fourth series.”

The third season’s Christmas special was shown in the US last Friday, courtesy of the SCI-FI channel. The cable network first started airing the revived comedy series in 2006.

Kylie Minogue has begun filming in Cardiff for her part in the Doctor Who Christmas special.

An on-set shot released by producers shows the singer crouched next to the Doctor, played by David Tennant, looking frightened.

She is in period dress for the role as Astrid, a waitress on the Titanic, in the episode entitled 'Voyage of the Damned'. It follows on from the last series which ended with the boat colliding with the Tardis.

Meanwhile, BBC chiefs have denied the show is focused on celebrity after it was confirmed Catherine Tate would become a second assistant to the Doctor in the next series.

Peter Fincham, BBC One controller, said: "That's absolutely editorial creative thinking. Doctor Who needs surprise. I think it's exciting. Doctor Who sets a high bar and you've got to keep jumping over it."

Clive Swift will be appearing in the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas Special - 'The Voyage of the Damned'.

Best known for his role as Hyacinth Bucket's husband Richard in the long-running BBC One sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, 71-year-old Swift told The Jewish Telegraph about his upcoming role in the sci-fi drama: "It's a lovely part and I'll be working with Kylie Minogue, who I was introduced to at the read-through, and David Tennant, who is a terrific actor."

Swift is already known to Whovians through a pivotal role in the 1985 story 'The Revelation of the Daleks', where his character Jobel met a violent end. No further details about his latest part have been released.

Catheine Tate: The New companion...

Catherine Tate has been confirmed as David Tennant's new companion in the next series of Doctor Who.

The comedian will reprise her role as Donna, who featured in the most recent Christmas special, 'The Runaway Bride', for the full thirteen-episode run of series four. As previously reported, Freema Agyeman will return to the show mid-way through the series, which begins filming this month for broadcast from next Easter.

Kylie Minogue has signed up to appear in this year's Doctor Who Christmas special alongside David Tennant.

The Australian singer will start filming one of the lead roles for the episode this month in Cardiff, Wales.

It has been confirmed that the storyline for the show, Voyage of the Damned, will follow on from the end of series three where the Titanic crashed into the Tardis.

Executive producer of the show, Russell T Davies, said about the news: "We are delighted and excited to announce that Kylie Minogue will be joining the Doctor. Okay, so no preview tapes have been doing the rounds due to the BBC's desire to keep the climactic events of the third season finale under wraps. Fair play too, because we don't really want to be spoiled do we? So here's a quick guide to what might be coming up, based on the various snippets that have been released to the media...

'The Last of the Time Lords' has very much been pitches as Martha Jones' episode. At the end of 'The Sound of Drums' she managed to teleport to relative safety, away from the clutched of The Master. We know that Freema Agyeman has shot scenes by the sea, at night, emerging onto the beach. It looks like she will hook up with a character called Thomas Milligan, played by former EastEnders star Tom Ellis.

Curiously, the 'next time' trailer depicted Martha examining the inner contents of a Toclafane. What could be lurking inside? Bear in mind that the last two season finales have both featured the 'shock' return of the Daleks, so perhaps an old foe might be somehow hidden inside those murderous, metallic orbs.

According to tabloid reports, three endings have been filmed for the finale. These apparently involve Martha being abducted by aliens, The Doctor regenerating and the Tardis blowing up with our time travelling crew inside. These may well be red herrings and something more jaw-dropping may be on the cards. Having said that, who wouldn't be utterly stunned if David Tennant turned into Robert Carlyle, as previously rumoured? That's not a purely rhetorical question, as it's easy to imagine a nation of Tennant lovers emitting one final squee and burying their heads in their hankies.

Remember the sudden appearance of Catherine Tate in the season finale last year, setting up the events for 'The Runaway Bride'? Could a Kylie Minogue appearance be on the cards, given that she's all set to appear in the festive edition of Doctor Who this year? Also, don't forget that Hugh Grant's name was banded around for the Christmas episode not so long ago, so who knows what surprise we may have in store? The only way to find out is to tune in this Saturday at 7.05pm...
